Fitting All Your Guests in your Home during the Holidays
The holiday season is said to be filled with loved ones, but what they don’t tell you in those lovely songs and stories is just how difficult it can be logistically to fit all of your visiting family members inside the same house. In these tough economic times, it can be punishing for visitors to afford staying at a hotel for an entire week, especially when prices are jacked up due to the heavy travel loads around the country during the holidays. Instead of just telling friends and family members who typically visit for the holidays but who usually stay in motels and hotels to just not come this year so they can save money, you can take an alternative approach. You can easily fit everyone who visits inside of your household; you’ll just have to be creative in how you fit them all.
Start by utilizing wood bunk beds as much as possible. Bunk beds provide double the sleeping space for every bit of floor space taken up, and every last inch you have available will be critical, especially if your house is on the small side. You can either rent metal bunk beds if you don’t have some sets available already, or you can purchase some rather inexpensively if you know where to look. Any person visiting who doesn’t have a partner who shares his/her bed can easily fit in a bunkbed, and that will help you save the larger beds for visiting couples. Plus, if you purchase those extra bunk bed sets, you can save them later on, and even give them to your kids to use individually. Even if your child has her own room, she can use the top bunk for sleeping, and keep the bottom bunk for friends sleeping over, or to store her stuffed animal collection.
To free up more available bed space inside of your home, have your kids and their cousins/visiting friends their age sleep in sleeping bags on the floor. Kids, especially the younger set, tend to love the idea of camping indoors, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to convince them. For anyone with a bad back who can’t sleep on the floor well, provide the use of a free sofa or other piece of long furniture at night.
For everyone else and all the couples, utilize all the large beds in your home. If you still need extra sleeping space, you can always pick up some air mattresses, which are plenty easy to inflate using an electric pump. By doing all of this, you’ll avoid having to make any major permanent alterations to the inside of your home, preserving your house’s interior design even with all the visitors filling its halls. However, if you don’t like your home’s interior design and were planning on gutting half the house anyway, having such a large number of guests visit could be the encouragement you need to revitalize the floor plan and layout of furniture in your home.
